What should you do after being waitlisted by a college?
I’m a high school senior and I just got waitlisted at one of my top-choice colleges. I’m trying to figure out the right next steps so I don’t miss anything important or hurt my chances.
I want to know what students are actually supposed to do after getting waitlisted, especially while also deciding where to commit by May 1.

First, follow the college’s waitlist instructions exactly. If they ask you to opt in, do that right away. If they say not to send extra materials, respect that. If they allow updates, send only meaningful ones.
Your main priority is still to choose another college and commit by May 1. Submit your enrollment deposit at a school you would genuinely attend. Being waitlisted is not an acceptance, so you need a secure option in place.
If the college accepts a letter of continued interest, send a short, specific one. Reaffirm that you would attend if admitted, if that is true. Then share important updates such as stronger grades, a new award, a leadership role, or a significant accomplishment. Keep it focused and sincere.
You can also ask your school counselor whether an additional recommendation or update would help, but only if the college allows it and the new information adds something real. More materials are not automatically better.
After that, check your email and applicant portal regularly.
If you do get admitted off the waitlist later, you can then decide whether to switch. Just be aware you may lose your original enrollment deposit, and sometimes housing or financial aid details can differ from what regular admits received.
