Is MIT or UIUC academically harder for undergraduates?

For the typical engineering undergraduate, MIT is likely to feel academically harder and more consistently workload-intensive than UIUC. MIT’s curriculum combines demanding major requirements with the General Institute Requirements, including substantial math, science, humanities, arts, and communication coursework. Its problem-set culture also means students regularly spend significant time collaborating on difficult assignments outside class.

MIT places nearly every student in an unusually concentrated academic environment: classmates are strong in quantitative work, courses often move quickly, and advanced material appears early. Engineering students commonly balance several technical classes at once, with frequent exams, labs, design work, and long psets. MIT does provide structured supports such as pass/no record grading for first-semester first-years and extensive peer collaboration, but those supports do not make later coursework light.

UIUC engineering, particularly within The Grainger College of Engineering, is also very rigorous. Core sequences in calculus, physics, programming, circuits, mechanics, and major-specific courses can be demanding, and some programs such as computer science and electrical or computer engineering have especially intense workloads. However, the size of UIUC and the wider range of programs, course pathways, and student schedules create more variation in the average undergraduate experience.

A single UIUC course can absolutely be as difficult as its MIT counterpart, especially in upper-level engineering. The main difference is consistency: MIT more uniformly builds a high-pressure, math-heavy workload into the undergraduate experience, while UIUC’s intensity depends more on the engineering major, course selection, and how aggressively a student pursues advanced classes.
