What makes a strong college supplemental essay?

I’m a high school senior working on applications and I feel more stuck on the supplementals than the main personal statement. I understand they’re supposed to be more specific, but I’m not sure what actually makes one stand out to admissions.

I want to make sure I’m answering the prompt in a way that feels personal and not generic.

A strong supplemental essay does two things at once: it answers the exact prompt and reveals something specific about you that the rest of your application does not fully show.

What usually makes a supplemental stand out is precision. Instead of broad claims like “I love helping people” or “your school has many opportunities,” strong responses use concrete details, clear examples, and a focused point of view.

For “Why us?” essays, the best answers connect you to that college in a believable way. That means naming particular classes, programs, research centers, traditions, or communities, then explaining why they matter to your interests or goals. Simply listing resources is not enough.

For community, identity, or values prompts, choose one angle rather than trying to explain your whole life. A small moment, habit, conversation, responsibility, or belief often works better than a huge life summary because it feels more vivid and personal.

A good supplemental also sounds like it could only belong to you and only fit that prompt. If you could swap in another college’s name or if another applicant could have written the same essay, it is probably too generic.

One useful test is this: after reading the essay, could an admissions reader say something specific about how you would contribute on campus, what you care about, or how you think? If yes, you are on the right track.
