Is Brown more affordable than UVA after financial aid?

For a Virginia resident, UVA is often less expensive at the published price because you receive in-state tuition, but Brown can be comparable or even cheaper for students with substantial demonstrated financial need.

Brown is most likely to come out ahead for a student from a lower- or moderate-income family whose financial profile produces a large need-based grant. Its no-loan policy can matter beyond the first year: a lower net price that is entirely grants and family contribution is different from a similar-looking package that includes borrowing or work expectations.

UVA may remain the more affordable option for a Virginia student whose family has limited demonstrated need, because the in-state cost is already far below Brown’s sticker price. It can also be compelling for families who qualify for Virginia-specific aid, merit scholarships, or have college savings that make the lower starting price decisive. Neither school’s need-based aid should be assumed from income alone; home equity, assets, business ownership, family size, and siblings in college can materially change the result.

Compare the official net price calculators for both schools using the same current financial information, then compare the estimated annual net cost rather than tuition alone. Include required fees, housing and meals, health insurance if applicable, travel from Virginia to Providence, and whether either estimate includes loans or student employment.
