Brown vs. Vanderbilt for a Nursing Pathway: Which Undergraduate Option Is Better?

Brown’s pre-health track can prepare you for later nursing education, yet a Brown bachelor’s degree alone will not qualify you to sit for the NCLEX-RN.

At Brown, you could major in a field such as biology, public health, neuroscience, or another subject while completing prerequisites for an accelerated BSN or graduate-entry nursing program after college. Brown’s Open Curriculum can make it easier to shape a broad academic program, but you would need to plan nursing prerequisites carefully.

Being an undergraduate at Vanderbilt may make it easier to explore nursing-related courses, clinical interests, and the school’s graduate offerings, but admission to Vanderbilt’s nursing graduate programs is separate and not assured.

For a senior whose priority is the most direct and practical path to becoming an RN, a university with an accredited four-year BSN program would be more efficient than either option. Brown makes more sense only if you specifically value its undergraduate academic model and are comfortable committing to nursing school afterward.
