UW–Madison vs. University of Vermont: Which offers better overall value?

For most students, UW–Madison offers the stronger overall value when its net price is similar to, or only modestly above, the University of Vermont’s. It has a broader range of high-demand majors, a much larger research enterprise, and deeper recruiting connections across the Midwest and nationally. Those advantages can translate into more course options, undergraduate research, internships, and alumni contacts without needing to change schools or programs.

UW–Madison is especially compelling for students considering engineering, computer science, business, data-related fields, the natural sciences, economics, or research-intensive graduate study. Its scale also matters: students can explore multiple interests, access large academic departments, and pursue opportunities in Madison, a state-capital city with a substantial employer and internship presence. The tradeoff is that some introductory classes and campus systems can feel large and less personal.

UVM can justify a higher price for a student who specifically values its smaller-scale academic environment, Burlington location, and strengths connected to environmental studies, sustainability, health, public health, and outdoor-focused learning. The university’s setting near Lake Champlain and close access to natural resources can make hands-on environmental work feel more integrated into student life than it would at UW–Madison.

The deciding financial question is the size of the gap after grants, not the published price. A modest difference may be worth paying for the school where you are more likely to thrive academically and use campus opportunities. But if choosing UW–Madison would require substantially less borrowing, or if UVM’s premium would create significant debt, the added cost is difficult to justify unless UVM offers a very specific program, mentorship opportunity, or personal fit that UW cannot match.
