Northwestern vs. Amherst: Which offers better access to professors for undergraduates?

Amherst offers more consistently direct access to professors for undergraduates. Its small liberal-arts structure means faculty teach undergraduates at every level, and Amherst does not have graduate programs competing for professors’ advising attention or many research roles. At Northwestern, strong mentorship is very possible, but the experience is more department- and course-dependent because it is a large research university with graduate and professional schools.

At Amherst, discussion-based classes, close academic advising, and the open curriculum create frequent opportunities to talk with faculty about ideas beyond an assignment. Professors commonly supervise independent work and senior thesis projects, and undergraduates seeking research experience are often working directly with a faculty member rather than joining a large lab hierarchy. The Five College Consortium also broadens course options without changing Amherst’s small-campus faculty culture.

Northwestern has outstanding professors and substantial undergraduate research infrastructure, especially in fields such as engineering, journalism, neuroscience, economics, and the sciences. Once students move beyond introductory courses, join a lab, attend office hours consistently, or pursue a focused project, they can form excellent faculty relationships. However, larger gateway classes may be taught in lecture formats and research labs can include graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and staff, so access can require more initiative.

For a student whose top priority is having professors readily available for informal intellectual conversations, individualized mentorship, and early direct collaboration, Amherst provides the more reliably intimate environment. Northwestern can match that level of mentorship for proactive students, particularly within a major or research group, but it is not as built into the day-to-day undergraduate experience.
