Is UCLA or Yale better for sunny weather?

UCLA offers far more consistently sunny weather than Yale, and the difference would be very noticeable over four years. Los Angeles has a mild, dry climate with abundant sunshine through much of the academic year, while New Haven experiences a full Northeast winter with frequent cloud cover, cold temperatures, rain, and occasional snow. For a student who wants to spend substantial time outdoors year-round, UCLA has the clear climate advantage.

UCLA’s Westwood campus is near the Pacific, so mornings can sometimes begin with a coastal marine layer, especially in late spring and early summer. That “May Gray” or “June Gloom” effect often burns off later in the day, leaving comfortable afternoons. Fall, winter, and much of spring are typically especially pleasant for walking, studying outside, and attending campus events without needing heavy winter clothing.

At Yale, the weather changes much more sharply with the seasons. Early fall and late spring can be beautiful, but winters are genuinely cold, and students should expect stretches when outdoor plans require layers, boots, and more flexibility. New Haven also has more variable rainfall and overcast days than Los Angeles.
