Concrete references to a course, research question, publication, student organization, or aspect of Yale’s residential-college culture can work well when they connect to something you have already done or genuinely want to pursue. Avoid treating Yale as interchangeable with any other highly selective university by writing only about prestige, famous professors, or broad claims about “community.”

For Harvard, make its short answers reveal dimensions that may not be obvious in the activities section: how you contribute to a community, an idea you have reconsidered, an experience that shaped your perspective, or an interest you pursue beyond formal achievement. Harvard’s prompts are an opportunity to add voice and context, not to compress a résumé entry into a mini-essay. Specificity matters more than trying to sound unusually impressive.
