Is Johns Hopkins worth the higher cost than the University of Maryland for an in-state student?

For an in-state Maryland student, Johns Hopkins is worth paying more only when its net cost is close enough to UMD’s that you can avoid significant debt and you would genuinely use its smaller, research-intensive environment. Hopkins offers far smaller classes and earlier access to faculty and research than a large public flagship, particularly in areas such as biomedical engineering, public health, neuroscience, and the natural sciences. UMD delivers a strong education, extensive campus life, and major research opportunities at a substantially lower in-state price.

The clearest differentiator is academic scale and access. At Hopkins, undergraduates are surrounded by a compact student body and can more readily form sustained relationships with professors, labs, and mentors. That can be especially valuable for a student aiming for research, a thesis, selective graduate programs, or health-related pathways. UMD also has serious research capacity, but students often need to be more proactive in navigating a much larger university.

The financial difference should drive the decision more than the schools’ reputations. Compare each school’s official net-price estimate after grants and scholarships, not the published tuition figure. A Hopkins degree rarely justifies taking on large private loans or sacrificing financial flexibility, especially if UMD would leave you with little or no debt. For pre-med, graduate school, or any route requiring additional education, protecting your budget is particularly important.

UMD is not a fallback academically. Its strengths in computer science, engineering, business, government and policy, and many sciences can lead to excellent outcomes, while its location near Washington, D.C. creates substantial internship access. Hopkins makes the most sense when its academic culture, specific programs, and faculty access fit your goals in a way that feels meaningfully different, not merely more prestigious.
