Is Duke worth the higher cost compared with UGA?

For most students, Duke is not worth a substantially higher family cost than in-state UGA unless the extra cost is manageable without significant borrowing or financial strain. UGA is a major public research university with strong options across business, sciences, public policy, journalism, engineering, and the humanities, and an in-state price can create far more flexibility for graduate school, internships, study abroad, or an early-career move. Duke offers a more intimate undergraduate environment, extensive research access, and a particularly strong national network, but those advantages do not automatically produce an outcome large enough to justify major debt.

Duke fits a student who wants a private, highly resourced campus experience: smaller classes in many programs, close access to faculty, structured undergraduate research, and a residential community in Durham. It can be especially compelling when its specific programs, such as biomedical engineering, public policy, global health, or certain preprofessional pathways, align closely with a student’s goals and the cost difference is modest relative to the family’s finances.

UGA fits a student who is comfortable being proactive at a larger university and values graduating with little or no debt. Its Honors Program, internships in Athens and Atlanta, research opportunities, and broad alumni base can support ambitious outcomes, but students need to seek out faculty relationships, leadership roles, and selective programs rather than expecting them to arrive automatically.

A useful test is whether choosing Duke would require federal or private loans that materially limit post-college choices, or force family sacrifices that feel disproportionate. For careers requiring graduate or professional school, preserving money through UGA is often especially sensible.
