University of Maryland offers the stronger overall undergraduate CS research environment, especially for students seeking a wide range of lab options and connections to major research institutions. Its computer science department is closely tied to the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies, which brings together work in areas such as AI, machine learning, cybersecurity, robotics, vision, and systems.

Maryland’s breadth can make it easier to identify a faculty group that matches a specific interest, whether that is theoretical computing, human-computer interaction, data science, quantum computing, or security.
