The University of Michigan is typically more flexible for a student who is genuinely undecided, particularly if you enroll in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA). LSA students do not have to declare a major immediately and can choose among a broad range of LSA programs after exploring introductory courses. Michigan’s large, relatively unified undergraduate structure also makes it easier to take classes across fields before committing, though it has restrictions for capacity-limited programs.

At UIUC, major changes are more closely tied to the college and program you entered. Moving within the same college can be manageable when you meet course and GPA requirements, but transferring between colleges is a formal process and depends on space. This matters most for high-demand programs such as computer science, engineering, business, and some data-related majors, where entry is not assured after enrollment.
