Which is better for an undecided major: UIUC or Ohio State?

For an undecided student, Ohio State is the more flexible starting point. Its Exploration program is built for students who have not selected a major and provides structured advising while they investigate academic areas before declaring. Ohio State also makes it relatively straightforward to begin in a broad college such as Arts and Sciences and sample courses across departments.

UIUC offers outstanding breadth, but students are admitted to a specific undergraduate college and, in many cases, a particular major. Moving into highly subscribed UIUC programs, especially computer science, engineering, business, and some design-related fields, can require a separate internal transfer process and is not assured. That structure can be a drawback when your interests might shift toward a capacity-limited program after enrollment.

Ohio State has limits as well: entry to certain majors can involve prerequisites, GPA requirements, or separate applications after you enroll. UIUC makes more sense when you already have a reasonably firm academic direction and are comfortable entering the college that matches it, even if you may refine your major within that area.
