At UIUC, a pre-med can explore labs across molecular biology, chemistry, neuroscience, bioengineering, public health-related work, and the Carle Illinois College of Medicine environment. At Baylor University, research is more concentrated, but faculty mentorship and smaller classes can make a first lab position feel less impersonal.

UIUC is especially appealing if you are willing to be proactive. Its Office of Undergraduate Research, course-credit research options, and numerous faculty labs create many entry points, but students often need to email faculty strategically, attend office hours, and persist through applications before finding a position. The scale also makes it easier to change directions if one lab is not a fit, including toward computational biology or engineering-based health research.

Baylor has formal undergraduate research support through programs such as URSA and can offer earlier, more direct faculty contact. That can be valuable for securing a multi-year project, strong recommendation letters, and meaningful responsibility rather than short-term lab assistance. However, Baylor University in Waco and Baylor College of Medicine in Houston are separate institutions; attending Baylor University does not provide automatic access to Baylor College of Medicine labs or a direct medical-school pathway.

For a student who wants the widest menu of scientific and health-related research and is comfortable navigating a large campus, UIUC provides more upside. For someone who values close faculty access and a potentially smoother path into a consistent undergraduate lab role, Baylor may be the more practical choice. Medical schools will care more about sustained involvement, understanding your project, and strong mentorship than the name or size of the research institution.
