Which university has better student housing: Georgetown or UVA?

UVA has the better overall on-campus housing experience, though neither school puts every first-year in a uniformly modern residence hall. Its housing is more integrated into a large, residential campus, with a wider mix of traditional dorms, newer apartment-style options, and outdoor/common spaces. Georgetown’s dorms are convenient and socially active, but the compact urban campus means rooms and buildings can feel more variable and cramped.

At UVA, first-year students live on Grounds, often in traditional corridor-style dorms or newer/renovated areas. Some older first-year buildings have plainer rooms and fewer amenities, so the experience depends substantially on assignment. Still, UVA’s broader housing system gives students more options as they move beyond the first year, including suite- and apartment-style communities, and its central residential setting makes dining, libraries, classes, and student life easy to reach on foot.

Georgetown’s residence halls place students directly on the Hilltop campus, with DC immediately accessible for internships, restaurants, and city life. The tradeoff is that several halls are older and room size, air conditioning, bathrooms, and common-area quality can differ noticeably by building; Georgetown’s dense setting also leaves less room for the spacious, self-contained campus feel UVA offers.
