Which college has better beach access: Duke or UC San Diego?

UC San Diego has far better beach access. Its La Jolla campus sits immediately next to the coast, and students can walk or bike to beaches such as Scripps Beach, Blacks Beach, and La Jolla Shores depending on where they live and how far they want to go. For many UCSD students, an ocean walk, surf session, or sunset at the beach can be part of an ordinary week without needing a car.

UCSD is the clear fit for someone who wants the beach woven into daily campus life. The terrain is hilly and some beaches involve longer walks or stair access, but the campus is still exceptionally close to the shoreline.

Duke is a strong choice for students who value a traditional residential campus, Durham’s food and cultural scene, and occasional weekend trips to the North Carolina coast. However, Duke is inland. Reaching beaches near the North Carolina coast generally requires a car, a ride with friends, or an organized trip, and it is not realistic for a casual between-class beach visit. Without a car, regular beach access would be difficult.
