Is UT Austin or UPenn better for nursing?

For a student who wants to earn a bachelor’s degree in nursing and become an RN directly after college, the University of Pennsylvania is the clear choice. Penn has an established, direct-entry Bachelor of Science in Nursing program through the School of Nursing, with nursing coursework, clinical education, and preparation for the NCLEX-RN built into the undergraduate path. UT Austin does not offer a traditional prelicensure BSN program that leads directly to RN eligibility.

Penn fits students who are certain that nursing is their undergraduate focus and want access to a dedicated nursing school from the start. Its curriculum combines clinical preparation with Penn’s broader academic and health-sciences resources, and students complete clinical experiences as part of their degree.

UT Austin can make sense for a student who wants a different undergraduate major, such as biology, public health, psychology, or another field, before applying to nursing school later. That route would require an additional step: after graduating from UT Austin, you would need to complete an accelerated BSN, entry-level master’s, or another qualifying nursing program elsewhere before becoming an RN. It is not comparable to entering Penn Nursing as a first-year student.

Cost matters substantially here. Penn’s nursing program may carry a much higher total cost, particularly for a nonresident choosing between these options, while UT Austin could be financially attractive for a Texas resident. But that comparison only favors UT Austin if you are comfortable with the extra time, applications, and uncertainty of pursuing nursing after college.
