Which university offers better undergraduate teaching: Emory or Wake Forest?

Wake Forest has the stronger overall reputation for undergraduate teaching, particularly for students who want professors to be highly accessible and classes to feel centered on undergraduates.

Wake Forest’s smaller undergraduate scale and comparatively limited doctoral footprint in many departments tend to make it easier for students to know professors, participate in discussion-based courses, and receive detailed feedback. The university also places visible emphasis on faculty mentoring, office-hour relationships, and teaching across the undergraduate curriculum. That does not mean every course is small or every professor is equally available, but the campus culture more consistently rewards close instructional contact.

Emory offers excellent teaching and unusually strong academic resources, but it is a major research university with prominent graduate and professional schools. In some introductory science, economics, and social science courses, students can encounter a more research-university structure, including larger lectures and teaching assistants. Emory can be especially compelling for a student who wants access to research, health-related opportunities, Atlanta internships, and advanced faculty scholarship alongside strong instruction.

One important exception is Emory’s Oxford College pathway. Oxford provides a smaller, liberal-arts-style first two years before students continue to Emory’s Atlanta campus, so it may offer a closer teaching environment than beginning directly at Emory College. Still, for the specific priorities of accessible professors, clear instruction, meaningful feedback, and an undergraduate-first classroom culture, Wake Forest is the more dependable choice.
