What are the biggest differences in campus traditions at Emory and Rice?

Rice has the more tradition-driven, residentially unified undergraduate culture, while Emory’s traditions are visible and spirited but less likely to organize students’ everyday social lives. At Rice, the residential college system is the foundation: every undergraduate belongs to one of colleges, each with its own culture, spaces, leadership, intramurals, and recurring events. This creates a built-in community that remains central well beyond first year.

Rice’s signature all-campus tradition is Beer Bike, a spring competition in which residential colleges race in teams that combine cycling and drinking, with water substitutions available. The preparation, costumes, chants, and college rivalries make it more than a single event; it is one of the clearest expressions of Rice identity. Orientation Week is also run through the colleges, so students’ earliest friendships and traditions often begin there.

Emory’s best-known traditions are more campus-wide events rather than a residential-college culture. Dooley, Emory’s skeleton mascot, appears at events and is especially prominent during Dooley’s Week, when student programming, performances, and playful campus interruptions build school spirit. Songfest, a student performance tradition, is another recognizable communal event. Emory students can find strong communities through residence halls, student organizations, Greek life, and Atlanta-based activities, but those groups tend to shape social life more than one shared housing affiliation does.
