Which school offers better access to business internships: UC San Diego or NYU?

NYU offers more immediate access to business internships during the academic year, particularly for students targeting finance, consulting, marketing, media, real estate, luxury, and startups. Its New York City location makes part-time, in-semester internships practical, and NYU Stern has especially deep employer and alumni connections in those fields.

A student who wants to network frequently, attend employer events, and potentially intern a few days a week while taking classes will find NYU’s setting unusually advantageous. The tradeoff is that students must be proactive in a large, competitive applicant pool; location creates access, not a guaranteed internship.

UC San Diego is a strong option for someone interested in business connected to technology, data, life sciences, healthcare, sustainability, or entrepreneurship. San Diego has a meaningful biotech and technology ecosystem, and UCSD’s quantitative, research-oriented environment can be a real asset for roles such as business analytics, product, operations, and healthcare-related business. Its Rady School resources, campus recruiting, alumni network, and proximity to local companies can lead to solid opportunities.

However, UCSD’s local internship market is less dense and less walkable for traditional corporate business internships during the school year than NYU’s. UCSD students often pursue internships over the summer in San Diego, Los Angeles, the Bay Area, or elsewhere, while NYU students may have more realistic access to semester-long roles nearby.

For a student focused on Wall Street, consulting, consumer brands, media, or building a New York professional network from first year onward, NYU has the clearer access advantage. For a student whose business interests overlap with STEM industries and who values a major research university environment, UCSD can be highly effective, though it may require a more intentional search beyond the immediate campus area.
