UC San Diego vs. Emory: Which Offers Better Undergraduate Teaching?

For a student prioritizing professor access, smaller classes, and consistent individual attention, Emory typically offers the stronger undergraduate teaching experience. Its private-university scale tends to make it easier to build relationships with faculty, especially after introductory courses, and professors are a central part of advising, research mentorship, and seminar-based learning. UC San Diego has excellent faculty and serious academic opportunities, but its larger public research-university environment can make the early undergraduate experience feel less personal.

At UC San Diego, many lower-division courses, particularly in high-demand STEM fields, are taught in large lecture formats with discussion sections led by teaching assistants. Students can absolutely find engaged professors, office hours, lab positions, and small upper-level courses, but they often need to be proactive and persistent in seeking those connections. The experience can also differ substantially by major: a student in a smaller humanities department may encounter a very different classroom environment than one in computer science, biology, or engineering.

Emory is also research-focused, so it is not a small liberal-arts college where every class is intimate. Still, its undergraduate culture is more consistently built around direct faculty contact. Smaller seminars are more common, and students often have more routine opportunities to be known by professors rather than primarily by graduate teaching staff.

UC San Diego may be especially compelling for students who value the breadth, scale, and research intensity of a major public university and are comfortable taking initiative.
