Is the University of Florida or Caltech better for undergraduate STEM research?

I’m a high school senior planning to study a STEM field and am comparing the University of Florida with Caltech. My main priority is having strong opportunities to participate in meaningful undergraduate research, so I want to understand which school is generally better for that goal.

Programs such as the University Scholars Program can support longer-term undergraduate research projects, and the university’s scale means students can explore more disciplines, labs, and interdisciplinary directions.

At UF, research access can require more initiative: students may need to contact faculty, seek out programs, and distinguish themselves in larger departments. That independence can be a strength for a student who wants flexibility, a broader college experience, and room to change fields. For the most concentrated undergraduate research culture, Caltech has the edge; for breadth and a large research university with many possible pathways, UF may fit better.
