Is Northwestern or Lehigh more social for undergraduate students?

Lehigh is likely to feel more socially active in the traditional residential-college sense. Its campus culture has a strong weekend scene, prominent Greek life, and visible school spirit around athletics and campus events. Because Bethlehem is less integrated with a major city than Evanston, students often concentrate their free time on or immediately around campus.

At Lehigh, fraternities and sororities are an influential part of social life, even for many students who do not join. That can make it easy to find parties, themed events, and recurring groups early on, though it may feel less appealing to students who want a social environment not shaped as much by Greek organizations. The hillside campus also has a close-knit, self-contained feel that encourages students to run into one another.

Northwestern is social too, but its culture is more diffuse and student-driven. Students build community through dorms, clubs, performance groups, research, athletics, and Evanston restaurants and lakefront activities; Chicago also expands the range of things to do off campus. Its social scene tends to be less centered on one dominant party culture and more dependent on finding communities that match your interests.

Northwestern’s quarter system can make the academic pace feel intense, particularly during midterms, which may limit spontaneous socializing at certain points in the term. At the same time, its larger variety of student identities, organizations, and access to Chicago can produce a broader social life than Lehigh for someone who prefers concerts, food, arts, cultural events, or smaller friend-group gatherings over a concentrated weekend-party scene.
