Tallahassee also tends to feel more unified around FSU athletics because the university is the city’s dominant sports institution.

Northwestern competes in the Big Ten, one of the country’s most prominent athletic conferences, so students can see high-level opponents across many sports. Its programs have meaningful strengths, particularly in women’s lacrosse and field hockey. But Evanston’s location near Chicago, a smaller undergraduate population, and the school’s more academically oriented campus culture mean attendance and pregame energy are less likely to define a typical weekend in the way they do at FSU.

For overall fan intensity, traditions, and the feeling that athletics are central to the college experience, Florida State is the clearer choice. Northwestern is appealing for someone who wants access to Big Ten sports and selected elite teams without having campus life revolve as heavily around athletics.
