Which has stronger school spirit: Northeastern University or Notre Dame?

I’m a high school senior comparing Northeastern and Notre Dame, and school spirit is an important part of the college experience I want. I’m especially interested in how strongly students participate in campus traditions, athletics, and other community events at each school.

Notre Dame has markedly stronger, more visible school spirit than Northeastern. Its campus culture is organized around shared traditions, major athletic events, residence-hall communities, and a strong sense of alumni connection. Football Saturdays, in particular, shape the rhythm of fall on campus in a way few college traditions do.

The Catholic identity also contributes regular community gatherings and service traditions that many students see as part of campus life.

Northeastern has spirit and active student organizations, but it feels less universal and less tradition-driven. Hockey is its most prominent athletic focal point, and the student section can be energetic. However, Northeastern’s Boston setting, co-op structure, and large number of students cycling between classes, jobs, and off-campus opportunities create a more independent, career-oriented campus rhythm.

Students seeking broad participation in school colors, marquee games, and recognizable campus rituals will likely find Notre Dame more immersive. Northeastern’s community is more likely to be built through particular clubs, friend groups, academic programs, and Boston activities than through school-wide athletic and ceremonial traditions.
