Is Carnegie Mellon or the University of Chicago better for an economics career?

I’m a high school senior deciding between Carnegie Mellon and the University of Chicago for undergraduate study. I’m interested in building a career in economics, possibly in economic consulting, finance, or policy, and I want to understand which school generally provides stronger preparation and recruiting opportunities for those paths.

For a career centered on economics, the University of Chicago is the more compelling choice because of its unusually deep economics culture, broad course offerings, and strong recognition among employers and graduate programs. Its undergraduate economics program is closely connected to a faculty community known for influential work across economic theory, markets, public policy, and econometrics. Students can pursue rigorous empirical and theoretical training, engage with research-oriented faculty, and build a transcript that signals serious preparation for analytical roles or later economics graduate study. Chicago’s location also places students in a major business center with access to finance, consulting, research, and public-sector opportunities.

Carnegie Mellon remains an excellent option, particularly for someone who wants economics tightly integrated with computation, statistics, machine learning, or business analytics. Its economics training and the Tepper School of Business can be attractive to quantitatively oriented employers, and CMU’s broader strengths in computer science and data-driven problem-solving are valuable in finance, fintech, and analytics-heavy consulting.

The distinction is less about whether CMU can lead to those careers, because it certainly can, and more about the academic identity you want. UChicago offers the more economics-first environment, with especially strong preparation for economic analysis, consulting casework grounded in economics, public-policy research, and graduate-level economics. CMU can be particularly distinctive when your career plan involves using technical tools to solve economic or business problems, such as quantitative finance, pricing, forecasting, or data science.
