Which offers better city access for students: UVA or George Washington University?

George Washington University offers much better city access without a car. Its Foggy Bottom campus is embedded in Washington, DC, a short walk from the National Mall, downtown neighborhoods, museums, restaurants, internships, and federal agencies. The Foggy Bottom-GWU Metro station sits directly by campus, making other parts of DC and nearby Virginia and Maryland accessible by rail.

At GW, the city is part of a student’s daily routine rather than an occasional destination. Students can walk to performances at the Kennedy Center, use the Metro to reach neighborhoods such as Dupont Circle or Columbia Heights, and take advantage of a deep local internship market during the academic year. Many everyday errands, social plans, and professional opportunities can happen without a car or even a long commute.

UVA is in Charlottesville, which is a lively, walkable college town with good restaurants, music, outdoor access, and the Downtown Mall. Students can use the university bus system and the free Charlottesville Area Transit options to get around parts of town, but Charlottesville is much smaller and less transit-connected than DC. Reaching a major city such as Washington usually requires planning around bus, train, or car travel rather than a quick Metro ride.
