Is the University of Virginia or Columbia University academically more rigorous?

For the typical undergraduate, Columbia is likely to feel more academically rigorous because its required Core Curriculum adds a substantial, reading- and discussion-heavy workload on top of the major. UVA is demanding, especially in selective majors and advanced courses, but it gives most students more room to shape their general-education path and balance difficult semesters.

At Columbia College, students complete a common sequence that includes Literature Humanities, Contemporary Civilization, Art Humanities, Music Humanities, University Writing, science requirements, and language study. Those courses often involve dense primary-source reading, frequent writing, and seminar-style preparation alongside major requirements. Columbia Engineering has a different core, but its math, science, and engineering sequence is also tightly structured.

UVA’s College of Arts 6 Sciences has broad curriculum requirements, including its general education curriculum and competency areas, yet students typically have greater flexibility in selecting courses and timing requirements. That can make a UVA schedule highly intense for an engineering, pre-med, economics, architecture, or advanced STEM student, but it also makes it easier to avoid stacking several writing- or reading-intensive obligations at once.

The difference is more about structure and academic culture than a simple gap in course quality.
