How does campus life at MIT compare with Ohio State?

MIT offers a smaller, more academically intense, tightly knit campus culture, while Ohio State delivers a much larger, more traditional Big Ten social experience with more ways to plug into campus life. At MIT, student life is shaped by a highly STEM-focused peer group, distinctive residence-hall cultures, maker and research projects, and a playful tradition of campus “hacks.” At Ohio State, the scale of Columbus, major athletics, Greek life, and a large undergraduate population make the atmosphere broader and more varied.

MIT students often spend time outside class working collaboratively on problem sets, building projects, participating in labs, attending club meetings, or socializing within their dorms and student groups. The workload can make campus feel busy and intense, but many students find that shared academic pressure creates close friendships quickly. Cambridge and nearby Boston add museums, food, concerts, internships, and city access, though MIT’s campus itself is compact and its student body is comparatively small.
