How should I compare MIT and RPI for undergraduate robotics?

I’m a high school senior interested in studying robotics as an undergraduate, especially through hands-on projects, research, and student teams. I’m deciding between MIT and RPI and want to understand which school offers the stronger overall environment for robotics students.

The biggest practical tradeoff is MIT’s unusually deep robotics ecosystem and research access versus RPI’s more intimate engineering-focused setting, where it can be easier to become a visible contributor on project teams early. MIT offers broader options across mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and computer science, artificial intelligence, controls, computer vision, and entrepreneurship, with major activity through labs such as CSAIL and the Media Lab. For undergraduate research, MIT has the edge. RPI has a project-oriented engineering curriculum, dedicated technical facilities, and opportunities to build through design teams, research, and capstone work. A proactive RPI student can develop an excellent robotics portfolio, particularly by taking ownership of a subsystem, competing with a team, and pairing that work with faculty research. Because the community is smaller, students may find it more straightforward to take on leadership or technical responsibility.

MIT is the stronger overall undergraduate robotics environment, assuming the financial packages are reasonably comparable. Its scale, interdisciplinary reach, research infrastructure, and alumni and industry connections provide more robotics-specific options. RPI is compelling for a student who values a smaller engineering community and expects to thrive by taking initiative in hands-on teams.
