Because most students live on or near its suburban campus and the undergraduate population is much smaller, it is often easier to recognize people, run into friends repeatedly, and build a dependable circle through dorm life, student groups, traditions, and informal gatherings. Its activities tend to be campus-centered, with Philadelphia available for occasional outings rather than serving as the default social setting.

For someone who wants frequent options and enjoys seeking out new people and events, Columbia has the broader social menu. For someone who values a familiar, close residential community over a busy city-based scene, Swarthmore can feel more immediately connected.
