Is Brown University or Caltech more collaborative?

For day-to-day academic collaboration, Caltech is likely the more consistently collaborative environment. Its small student body, intensive STEM curriculum, and Honor Code create a culture in which students commonly work through difficult problem sets together, compare approaches, and rely on classmates for help. Collaboration is especially visible in core science and math courses, labs, research groups, and the close-knit residential house system.

At Brown, students are also known for being supportive and less cutthroat than at many highly selective universities. The Open Curriculum lets students shape very different academic paths, however, so the experience can be more self-directed and less uniform: a student in a seminar-heavy humanities concentration may collaborate through discussion and peer feedback, while a student in a technical course may form study groups. Brown’s larger size and broader range of disciplines mean that academic collaboration depends more on the department, course, and friend group. Brown therefore offers a more flexible, interdisciplinary version of a cooperative culture, with more room to explore courses and communities beyond science and engineering.
