Is Boston University or Indiana University more fun for college?

For the most traditional, built-in college social scene, Indiana University Bloomington is likely to feel more fun. Its large residential campus, Big Ten athletics, Greek life, student traditions, and college-town setting create a concentrated social environment where people tend to meet through dorms, clubs, games, and weekend events. Bloomington also makes it easy to run into the same people around campus and downtown, which can help friendships form quickly.

IU suits a student who wants school spirit to be a major part of daily life and likes the idea of parties, basketball games, outdoor campus gatherings, and a social calendar centered on other students. There is plenty to do beyond Greek life, but the overall atmosphere is visibly communal and campus-focused. The tradeoff is that Bloomington is a smaller city, so many students’ entertainment revolves around the university and the local college-town scene.

Boston University fits a different kind of socially active student: someone energized by a major city and willing to seek out opportunities across neighborhoods. BU has student organizations, residence halls, arts events, and Division I hockey, but its social life is less centered on one contained campus. Students often make plans around Boston itself, including concerts, restaurants, museums, internships, and events with students from nearby colleges.

BU can be especially appealing for someone independent who enjoys exploring and does not need a classic Saturday-at-the-stadium culture to feel connected. Because the campus stretches along Commonwealth Avenue and many students disperse into the city, meeting people may take more initiative than at IU. For an immediate, highly visible campus social atmosphere, IU has the edge; for a more urban, varied social life, BU offers a different kind of fun.
