BU vs. Ohio State: Which Has Better Student Life?

The biggest tradeoff is that Boston University offers an urban, neighborhood-based social life woven into Boston, while Ohio State offers a more traditional, large-campus community with a highly visible school-spirit culture. BU’s Charles River Campus runs along Commonwealth Avenue, so students move between city blocks, residence halls, cafés, the T, and Boston internships or events. Ohio State has a more self-contained Columbus campus, where dining, recreation, student organizations, athletics, and weekend activity are concentrated around the university.

At BU, student life can feel energetic but less automatically communal. There are many clubs, residence-hall communities, performances, and opportunities across Boston, but students often need to be intentional about finding their circle because the campus is integrated into a major city and many people spread out for internships, work, or off-campus plans. The upside is exceptional access to neighborhoods, museums, concerts, restaurants, and other colleges in Boston.

Ohio State tends to make it easier to feel part of a broad student crowd quickly. Its enormous student organization scene, prominent football culture, campus traditions, and active areas near campus create frequent shared events. That scale can also be impersonal at first, so smaller communities such as a major, residence hall, club, learning community, or Greek organization matter for finding close friends.

For a student who wants college life to feel centered on campus, with major sports and a constant stream of large social events, Ohio State is likely the more connected student-life experience. BU is the stronger choice for someone who wants a smaller-feeling social circle within a dense city and sees Boston itself as a central part of their college experience.
