Is Boston University or Barnard better for women pursuing STEM?

The biggest practical tradeoff is a women-centered undergraduate community with access to Columbia’s STEM ecosystem at Barnard versus Boston University’s larger, self-contained research university with more distinct STEM pathways and professional schools. Barnard can provide an unusually supportive peer environment for women in technical fields while letting students take Columbia courses and engage with its broader labs, student organizations, and New York City opportunities. BU offers substantial computer science, data science, engineering, and research infrastructure on one campus, with a broader mix of undergraduate peers and more options to move among STEM-related schools and programs.

For day-to-day support as a woman in STEM, Barnard has a real advantage. Its mission, advising culture, and smaller undergraduate setting are built around women’s education, and STEM students can find community without being separated from the resources of a major research university. The Columbia connection is especially appealing for a student who wants a liberal-arts college home base but access to extensive upper-level coursework, research, and technical communities.

BU may be more compelling if you want a conventional university experience and expect to explore across computer science, engineering, data science, health fields, or entrepreneurship. Its Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences and College of Engineering create visible STEM hubs, and Boston’s concentration of universities, hospitals, and technology employers can make internships and research connections especially accessible. BU also has organizations and programs supporting women in computing and engineering, though the overall campus culture is not centered on women in the way Barnard’s is.
