BU vs. Northwestern: Which College Has a Better Student Social Life?

Neither has a universally “better” social life, but Northwestern tends to feel more campus-centered and cohesive, while Boston University offers a more independent, city-integrated social experience. Northwestern’s Evanston campus is compact and residential, so students regularly run into classmates, attend campus events, and form routines around dorms, student organizations, athletics, and the lakefront. BU stretches along Commonwealth Avenue in Boston, giving students immediate access to neighborhoods, restaurants, concerts, internships, and the wider city, but requiring more initiative to build a close campus circle.

Northwestern is a strong match for someone who wants college life anchored in a recognizable campus community. Its residential setup, active student organizations, performance scene, Big Ten sports culture, and Greek life create many built-in ways to meet people. Evanston also has restaurants and coffee shops nearby, while Chicago is accessible for a change of pace. The tradeoff is that students who want a dense, always-on major-city environment may find Evanston quieter than Boston.
