Is Columbia or Boston University better for building a career in New York City?

The biggest practical difference is access: Columbia lets you build New York relationships during the academic year, while a BU student can reach the same market but will need to plan trips, remote networking, and summer time more deliberately. Being in Morningside Heights makes it easier to attend employer events, meet alumni for coffee, take an in-semester internship, or interview in person without leaving campus for a full day.

That advantage is not an automatic job offer. Entry-level hiring still depends heavily on your internships, relevant coursework, campus involvement, interview preparation, and the relationships you personally develop. Columbia students also face substantial competition from classmates seeking the same high-profile New York opportunities, so proximity matters most when you actively use it.

BU is well established in Boston and has alumni in New York. A BU student can pursue New York internships during summers, use BU career and alumni resources, connect through LinkedIn and employer programs, and travel down for selected interviews or networking events. The main limitation is that a part-time New York internship during the semester is much less convenient from Boston, which can reduce the volume of early contacts you build.

For a student whose priority is launching a career in New York immediately after graduation, Columbia provides the clearer structural advantage because the city functions as an extension of campus. BU remains a credible route to New York, particularly if it offers meaningfully better affordability, a stronger academic fit, or a program you prefer; in that case, commit early to New York-focused summers and networking rather than assuming the degree alone will carry you there.
