How does the cost of attending UW–Madison compare with Michigan State?

I’m a high school senior comparing the University of Wisconsin–Madison and Michigan State University. I’m trying to understand which school is generally more affordable after considering tuition, housing, meal plans, and typical financial aid differences.

For a Wisconsin resident, UW–Madison will typically be less expensive than Michigan State; for a Michigan resident, Michigan State will typically be less expensive than UW–Madison. The resident-versus-nonresident tuition difference is far larger than the usual difference in housing or meal-plan prices. For students paying nonresident rates at both schools, Michigan State is often the lower-cost option on the published annual cost of attendance, though the exact gap changes by program and year.

Housing and food are relatively comparable in structure: both universities offer multiple residence-hall, dining, and off-campus options, and first-year students commonly live on campus. Madison’s off-campus market can be expensive, especially near campus, so students who remain in Madison beyond the first year should budget carefully for rent. East Lansing can offer somewhat more flexibility in off-campus housing costs, but individual leases, roommates, and dining choices matter more than a small difference in a school’s standard housing estimate.

Financial aid may change the comparison, but neither school should be assumed to erase a large nonresident tuition gap through merit aid alone. Federal aid, such as Pell Grants and federal loans, can be used at either institution and will not usually favor one school simply because of state residency.

Compare each student’s official net price estimate, not just sticker price. Enter the same family financial information into both schools’ net price calculators, then add likely travel costs, health insurance if needed, and a realistic off-campus housing estimate for later years.
