Should I Choose University of Wisconsin–Madison or Virginia Tech for Architecture?

Choose Virginia Tech for architecture, especially if your goal is to become a licensed architect. Virginia Tech offers a five-year Bachelor of Architecture that is professionally accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board, making it a direct educational route toward licensure. The University of Wisconsin–Madison does not offer a comparable professional Bachelor of Architecture program.

Virginia Tech’s architecture curriculum is built around intensive design studios, architectural technology, history and theory, structures, environmental systems, and professional practice. That sequence matters because it provides the accredited professional degree most U.S. jurisdictions expect as part of the licensure path, followed by the Architectural Experience Program and licensing exams.

The program also gives students access to a large architecture-focused college and to study opportunities at the Washington-Alexandria Architecture Center near Washington, D.C.

Wisconsin–Madison can be an excellent university for many design-adjacent interests, but it is not the place to choose for a conventional, professional architecture-degree pathway. Attending Madison would likely mean planning on a later accredited M.Arch elsewhere, adding time and tuition before you reach the same educational milestone.
