Is Yale or Columbia better for building a career in New York City?

For building an early-career network and accumulating New York-based experience while in college, Columbia has the clearer advantage. Its Manhattan location makes semester-time internships, informational interviews, campus recruiting events, and part-time work far more accessible without requiring a train trip from campus. Many employers can also engage with Columbia students through on-campus events or short meetings during the workday.

That proximity matters most in fields where hiring is relationship-driven or internships frequently continue during the academic year, including finance, media, publishing, arts, startups, policy, real estate, and some technology roles. A Columbia student can realistically take a morning class, commute to an afternoon internship, and remain involved with student organizations in the evening. Being embedded in the city also makes it easier to test different industries before committing to one.

Yale still offers an exceptionally strong path to New York. Its alumni presence in the city is substantial, its name is widely recognized by employers, and students regularly secure New York internships and post-graduation jobs through recruiting, alumni outreach, and summers in the city. Yale may be especially compelling if its academic programs, residential culture, or campus environment fit you noticeably better, because those factors can shape how well you perform and build relationships.

The practical distinction is access during the school year rather than whether either degree can open doors in New York. Columbia gives you a built-in four-year New York professional environment; Yale gives you a more traditional residential college experience with strong access to the city, but requires more intentional travel and planning to take advantage of it.
