Northwestern’s Evanston campus and Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago create strong opportunities too, particularly for students interested in cognitive neuroscience, neurotechnology, computation, and interdisciplinary work.

Johns Hopkins has a particularly deep neuroscience identity at the undergraduate level, with a dedicated neuroscience major and a campus culture where lab involvement is a common part of the academic experience. Students can pursue faculty research and independent projects. The main challenge is that sought-after labs can be competitive, so initiative in contacting professors, reading their work, and being flexible about research topics matters.

Northwestern is not a weaker research institution; its advantage is the range of ways a student can approach neuroscience. A student could connect neuroscience to cognitive science, biomedical engineering, data science, communication sciences, or psychology, and pursue work through Weinberg, McCormick, Feinberg, and affiliated research centers.

For undergraduate neuroscience research alone, Johns Hopkins has the slight edge, especially for a student who already knows they want intensive, lab-centered biomedical neuroscience.
