Harvard vs. Duke for Premed Research: Which Offers Better Undergraduate Opportunities?

I’m a high school senior interested in becoming a physician-scientist, so access to meaningful undergraduate research is one of my biggest college factors. I’m deciding between Harvard and Duke and want to understand which school generally offers stronger opportunities for premed students to get involved in research.

For a future physician-scientist, Harvard offers the broader biomedical research ecosystem, while Duke can offer a more integrated, campus-centered route into lab and clinical research. Duke may appeal more to a student who wants a tightly connected undergraduate experience with a major academic medical center built into daily campus life. Duke undergraduates can pursue faculty-mentored work through the university’s undergraduate research infrastructure and connect with medical-school and health-system investigators, including in clinical and translational fields. Its smaller undergraduate community can make it easier to build continuity with a mentor, although students still need to reach out early and show reliability before receiving substantive responsibilities.

Neither name guarantees meaningful research. At either school, the strongest preparation would be joining a lab early, staying long enough to take ownership of a project, pursuing summer funding or a research program, and seeking a mentor who can explain the physician-scientist path.
