Harvard’s undergraduate House system gives students a defined residential community after their first year, while CMU’s close-knit feel comes more from its individual schools and collaborative workloads.

Harvard’s campus sits in Harvard Square and blends into Cambridge, with easy access to Boston, restaurants, speakers, museums, athletics, and student organizations across a very large undergraduate population. Social life can range from house events and cultural groups to campus traditions and off-campus outings. Its well-known final clubs exist but are optional and are only one small part of a wider social scene.

Carnegie Mellon’s compact Oakland campus in Pittsburgh feels more concentrated and maker-oriented.
