Which has stronger sustainable campus activities: UIUC or the University of Oregon?

I’m a high school senior comparing UIUC and the University of Oregon, and I want to stay involved in sustainability beyond my classes. I’m especially interested in student organizations, campus environmental projects, and opportunities to participate in sustainability initiatives.

The biggest practical difference is that UIUC offers a larger, more technical sustainability ecosystem tied to engineering, research, and campus operations, while the University of Oregon makes sustainability feel more embedded in everyday student life and student-led campus culture. At Oregon, the Student Sustainability Center gives students a visible hub for organizing, education, and projects, and sustainability is closely connected to Eugene’s outdoors-oriented and environmentally engaged community. UIUC’s Student Sustainability Committee provides a route for students to propose, fund, and carry out campus sustainability projects.

At UIUC, students interested in applied work can connect sustainability to energy, food systems, transportation, waste, buildings, and environmental technology. The Illinois Sustainable Technology Center, campus sustainability offices, the Sustainable Student Farm, and numerous academic and student groups create opportunities for students who want to build technical skills or work on large institutional projects. The scale can be a plus, although it may take more initiative to find a close-knit community.

Oregon has strong opportunities for hands-on involvement through its student sustainability programs, environmental organizations, campus gardens and food-related initiatives, waste-reduction efforts, and outdoor and conservation-oriented activities. Its sustainability scene may be easier to enter as a new student because student-facing programs and environmental advocacy are highly visible on campus.

For sustainable campus activities specifically, the University of Oregon has the slight edge: it offers a more cohesive, accessible student sustainability culture. Choose UIUC instead if you are particularly drawn to using sustainability involvement as a pathway into engineering, research, policy, or large-scale operational projects.
