Which Has Smaller Classes, Georgetown or Wellesley?

Wellesley offers the more consistently small, discussion-based classroom experience. Its undergraduate enrollment is far smaller than Georgetown’s, and its liberal arts college structure means seminars, close faculty contact, and participation-heavy courses are central to the normal academic routine. Georgetown has many excellent small classes too, but students are more likely to encounter larger introductory lectures, especially in popular majors and pre-professional pathways.

At Wellesley, professors are typically very accessible, and it is common for students to see the same faculty members repeatedly within a major. Classes often emphasize writing, conversation, presentations, and detailed feedback. The college’s residential scale also makes faculty mentorship, office hours, and informal academic relationships feel more built into campus life.

Georgetown’s larger university setting brings a broader range of schools, programs, and course options, including business, international affairs, public policy, and health-related fields. That breadth can mean a less uniform class-size experience: an introductory economics, government, or science course may be lecture-based, while upper-level electives and seminars become much smaller. Students who actively use office hours and choose seminar-style courses can still build strong professor relationships there.

For a student whose top priority is having small, participatory classes from the beginning and being readily known by professors, Wellesley has the clearer edge.
