How should I compare the admissions difficulty of Georgetown and Carnegie Mellon?

The biggest practical difference is that Georgetown is highly selective across all of its undergraduate schools, while Carnegie Mellon’s difficulty changes much more dramatically by the school and program you apply to. Carnegie Mellon’s School of Computer Science and drama programs are among its most difficult entry points; engineering, design, business, and other programs also have distinct applicant pools and preparation expectations. At Georgetown, your choice of college matters, but the overall level of selectivity is more consistent across the university.

The applications also emphasize fit in somewhat different ways. Georgetown’s required essays and interview make intellectual interests, values, service, and reasons for pursuing a Georgetown education especially visible.
