UT Austin’s computer science program has a particularly strong national reputation in areas that matter to software engineering, including systems, AI, security, and theory. Its large alumni base in Texas tech, frequent employer recruiting, and connections to companies with Austin offices create a powerful pipeline into internships and full-time roles. The program is rigorous and can feel competitive, especially in high-demand courses and recruiting.

UMass Amherst is also a respected CS program with notable strengths in machine learning, natural language processing, systems, and theoretical CS. Students can build excellent software careers through its coursework, research labs, project teams, and internships, including opportunities in Boston and beyond. Amherst is more of a traditional campus environment, though, so students often need to be more intentional about traveling for off-campus networking and pursuing internships outside the immediate area.

For a student focused specifically on software engineering careers, UT Austin has the edge because of its stronger tech-industry ecosystem, recruiter access, and depth of alumni connections. UMass Amherst remains an excellent option, particularly if its cost, campus culture, or academic environment is substantially more appealing, but UT Austin is the more advantageous choice when the two are similarly affordable.
