Which has a stronger small-campus feel: UT Austin or Northwestern?

Northwestern has the stronger small-campus feel. Its Evanston campus is compact, walkable, and physically centered around a relatively concentrated stretch of academic buildings, residence halls, and the lakefront.

Northwestern still has the resources and activity level of a major research university, especially with Chicago nearby, but day-to-day student life tends to feel contained within Evanston. Residential communities, smaller departmental cohorts, and the quarter system can make campus feel socially active and interconnected, though the faster academic pace may not feel intimate to everyone.

UT Austin can create close communities through honors programs, living-learning communities, student organizations, and individual colleges or majors. But the overall experience is unmistakably that of a very large public flagship: a broader, busier campus, far more students moving through central spaces, and Austin woven directly into student life. You can absolutely find a tight circle there, but it takes more intentional effort and the university itself is less likely to feel manageable at first glance.

For a student whose priority is regularly running into familiar people and having campus feel geographically and socially contained, Northwestern is the clearer match.
