Should I choose the University of Maryland or the University of Michigan for a consulting career?

The biggest practical tradeoff is Michigan’s broader, more established on-campus pipeline into national strategy consulting versus Maryland’s stronger proximity to Washington, D.C., and its consulting, government, and federal-contractor ecosystem. For traditional post-graduation management consulting, especially recruiting with large national firms, the University of Michigan typically offers more employer visibility, a deeper alumni network, and more developed student consulting organizations. Maryland can still lead to consulting, but students may need to be more proactive about networking, internships, and targeting the right offices.

At Michigan, Ross School of Business has particularly structured consulting preparation through coursework, clubs, alumni connections, and employer recruiting. Students outside Ross, including those in LSA, can pursue consulting too, but should deliberately build relevant experience and participate in consulting groups. Michigan’s overall national reputation also travels well across major consulting hubs such as Chicago, New York, and the West Coast.

Maryland’s Smith School of Business provides a solid business foundation and benefits from College Park’s location near D.C. That location can be especially valuable for consulting tied to public-sector work, technology, defense, healthcare, analytics, and government agencies. It may also be the more financially sensible choice, particularly for in-state students, and lower debt matters in an industry where early-career compensation is good but recruiting is never guaranteed.

For a career centered on management consulting, Michigan is the clearer choice when the cost difference is manageable, especially if admission is to Ross. Choose Maryland over Michigan when it offers a substantially lower cost or when you are genuinely more interested in D.C.-based, public-sector, or government-adjacent consulting than in the broadest national strategy-consulting recruiting pipeline.
